2010: RESOLUTE (heh)

2009 was a tough year for a lot of my friends. One of them tweeted today: “2009: Unfunny Joke.” People lost jobs, long-term relationships blew up, and tension and torpor seemed thicker in the air, sometimes, than they have any right to in the sovereign state of San Francisco. For me, it’s been a year stuffed full of change, growth, relapse, growth again, confusion, and research.

That’s not to say it hasn’t been fun, but man, that was an INTENSE 12 months.

On the heels of that, lately I’ve been making exceptional music, I’ve been drawing, and I’ve been working out daily, even if it’s just 20 push-ups here, 10 pull-ups there. My snowboarding chops are building to a fun level. I’ve pulled myself closer to some previously estranged circles of friends and have found myself feeling very lucky to live and work with such a concentrated pool of awesome. Things are really starting to flow.

On that note, here comes 2010. What do I want to do?

(i’m stealing Mat Honan’s format here- thanks @mat!)

Fitter:

1) I want to train to the point that I can pull off a there-and-back bike ride from San Francisco to Santa Cruz, CA (around 170 miles) in one day.

2) I want to up my daily exercise average from 20 minutes to 50 minutes.

3) I want to spend half of the year as a teetotaler. Maybe a quarter on, a quarter off.

Happier:

1) I want to live in Berlin for at least a few months. I absolutely love it there and it would be wonderful to have some time to really explore the place and its people.

2) I want to work to change my outlook on the past. I want to treat it like a library for future reference/laughs, instead of a laden plough to pull. Much of my life reads like a list of barely believable stories, and that’s a good thing.

3) I want to try and be less judgmental, less dismissive, and more emotionally open.

More Productive:

1) I want to establish an easy-to-follow structure and schedule for my life, so that it doesn’t feel like I’m trying to do 100 things at once. Omnifocus is about to become my pal.

2) I want to go out and meet more people that do what I do, to get a better feeling of connection to the community and a larger feedback loop.

3) I want to make time and space to write just for myself, in spite of the fact that I write for a living.

4) I want to own my finances, instead of just tolerating them.

5) I want to write this all down on the internet so you can all hold me to this.
